How do I measure my windows for shutters?

We are here to help you as much as we can to make it easier for you. Check out our how to measure and how to fit guides.

  1. Recess windows
  2. 1. Measure the exact size of the recess, height, and width in three places
  3. 2. Choose your mounting options
  1. Sash windows
  2. 1. Measure the exact width from architrave to architrave in three places
    2. Measure the exact height from the architrave to the top of the sill in three places
    3. Choose your mounting options.

What are these mounting options?

There are a variety of mounting options and framing styles available for our shutters – which one to use will depend entirely on the type of windows you have in your home.

    • Inside mount: If mounted on the front edge of the recess and the shutters will fold back against the walls on either side of the window.
    • Outside mount: Shutters are fixed onto the wall outside of the recess opening.
    • Sash windows: We normally mount the frame just inside the architrave

Pros and Cons: DIY Shutters

Pros:

      • Accessibility: Ideal for customers outside London, so you can still enjoy the quality and expertise of Plantation Shutters Ltd.
      • Flexibility: You have the freedom to install the shutters at your convenience or hire a local professional.

Cons:

      • Measurement Accuracy: The responsibility for precise measurements falls on you. Incorrect measurements can lead to ill-fitting shutters. You’ll need to take accurate measurements yourself — any errors could result in shutters that don’t fit properly.
      • Installation Challenges: Without professional installation, more complex window shapes or styles may pose challenges
      • Time Commitment: Measuring, ordering, and installing the shutters yourself can be time-consuming.
      • Potential Additional Costs: If you hire a local installer, the added expense could reduce the savings of the DIY approach.

Our DIY service is ideal for customers outside London who still want high-quality shutters paired with expert and friendly guidance. That said, we generally don’t recommend installing your shutters yourself as there’s no room for mistakes as a small measuring error can cause big issues. We always recommend trusting an experienced team to take care of everything, ensuring a flawless fit and finish.

Get in touch today and we will find the perfect plantation shutters for your windows or patio doors!
