With the current heatwaves in London, shutters are your best friend, keeping out sun light and reducing the heat from coming in. Keep your windows open to let that fresh air in, all while maintaining your privacy. As the summer sun is shining and temperatures rise, your home’s shutters not only add curb appeal but also protect your windows and interiors from heat and glare.
Our shutters are painted with UV protected coating to ensure they will last in these highest of heatwaves without fading or warping. But summer brings more than just sunshine. Your shutters are exposed to increased dust, pollen and high temperatures. Regular upkeep helps prevent wear and tear, prolongs the life of your plantation shutters, and ensures they operate smoothly when you need them most especially during those hot days.
Whether you have wooden shutters, MDF shutters or PVC-composite shutters , in this guide you can discover how to keep your plantation shutters looking fresh and functioning all summer long.
Are shutters hard to clean?
The good news is that shutters, whether functional or decorative, are relatively easy to maintain, and cleaning them should be a breeze if you follow these simple steps.
How to clean your shutters?
- 1. Dusting. Start with dusting by using our feather duster or microfiber cloth to remove loose dust or pollen. These types of dusters can flick off dust quickly, can go through the slats easily, and are so soft that you do not have to worry about scratching the finish. Simply tilt down all the slats of the plantation shutters and dust away in a downward stroke. Do one side first before dusting the reverse side. This should always be the first step to avoid grimy particles building up in corners when a slight amount of moisture is introduced.
- 2. Vacuum or sweep away whatever debris that may have fallen to the floor after dusting. This will lessen the risk of dust floating back to the shutters while you are cleaning.
- 3. Wipe. Begin with a dry cloth and wipe both the shutters and the surrounding window area. Slightly dampen the cloth, taking care to remove excess moisture to avoid leaving water marks or stains on the slats. Never directly spray any substances onto the shutters, use chemical cleaners, or allow water to dry on the slats, as this could harm the protective finishes applied during manufacturing.
- 4. Dry. After wiping down with the dampened cloth, go over the area once more with a dry cloth to ensure any remaining moisture is removed from the surface.
- 5. Enjoy your clean shutters!
How often do I need to clean my shutters?
Cleaning your shutters weekly is sufficient, however you might want to clean them more frequently if you have pets or feel that they get dustier than normal. Especially in the summer as windows are open more, we recommend doing this as often as possible.
How to maintain your shutters in good condition?
- Don’t leave your windows open if its raining outside. All shutter materials are not waterproof.
- Dust them regularly in order to keep your shutters looking their best. Regular cleaning prevents dirt buildup and maintenance.
- If over time you notice that your slats have loosened, then a slight adjustment of your tension screw will do the trick. Simply use a Phillips head screwdriver to adjust the tension as needed, being careful not to overtighten.

Well-maintained shutters enhance your property’s curb appeal, provide shade and privacy, and frame your home in style – no matter how hot it gets. Taking the time to clean and inspect them regularly during the summer ensures long-term durability and performance, so make it part of your home care routine.
