Interior Design Tips All First-Time Home Owners Should Know

One of the main reasons people can’t wait to own their homes is so they can design it the way they want.  But when it comes to actually decorating you can get a bit lost on where to start. Just remember to add your personality and don’t get too caught up in making sure everything matches perfectly.

Make a detailed plan of what it is you want your new home to look like. Think about the overall mood you want to portray in your home. Soft and cosy or bright and open or even a mixture of both. Don’t worry too much about the trends because at the end of the day it’s your home and you will be the one living in it.

Don’t rush the process. Take your time to really determine what it is you want in your home. Create a vision board and put together all the things that you like. Spend some money to ensure the home is structurally sound, dry and warm. Figure out what it is like to live in the home and see what essentials may be missing. Live in the space for a few weeks or even months first. Find out what items such as furniture you really like and that would work in your space. Think long term goals rather than quick fixes. In doing so this can really help in keeping costs down if you don’t have a large budget or just don’t want to spend unnecessary money.

Lighting can really transform a place.  It can create a huge impact and drastically change the entire feel of the room. There are so many different lighting options and wattages so do your research on which kind of lighting you want in your home and that would complement the space. Determine whether you want small ceiling lights, one large centred chandelier, floor lamps, candles or side lamps. You can create a huge impact with lighting and how you use it. The options are endless.

Start with a neutral base colour and then build on top of that. That way you start with a clean slate and you aren’t blinded by what you want your end result to look like. It’s easier to start with a blank canvas and add to it rather than picturing the final image when all you’re looking at is already a busy or distracting picture.

Remember above all, express yourself. Don’t lose yourself in the process to the point that you don’t recognise or even like your new home. Don’t be afraid to be bold with your design and really put yourself and your family into it. If you want a large photo wall of your loved ones. Do it. At the end of the day it’s your home not anyone else’s. Use items that express your personality and don’t worry too much in matching everything. You don’t want your home to feel like a John Lewis display. Also, have fun and don’t sweat the small stuff. It all works out in the end.
