Introducing Scandinavian Style to your Home

Introducing Scandinavian Style to your Home

When it comes to redesigning your home, it’s hard to know where to start. If you love the minimalist style, then you’re going adore the Scandinavian influence.

Scandinavian Style is a style movement considered by simplicity, minimalism and functionality that emerged in the early 20th century, but the design ideas are still coming out of the Nordic region to this day. The design evolved from the fact that in the Nordic countries the winters were long and dark, meaning there was little daylight and people often had very small houses, causing the need for bright and airy, yet cosy homes. It is now being introduced into homes worldwide as more and more people are joining the minimalism movement and it looks like it's here to stay for a while.

The typical colour palette of the Scandi Style is typically light and simple with a mixture of pale greys, whites, natural or white woods and pale pinks, blues, yellows or purples as an accent colour. With the aim of keeping things light and fresh, these neutral colours reflect the light and enhance the sense of a calm and bright space.  Although this colour scheme is neutral and clean it shouldn’t feel hard and cold. To create a soft and cosy living space, introduce soft furnishings and plenty of cushions and rugs that fit into the colour scheme you have chosen. Candles and botanicals also help with making your space feel homelier.

Plantation Shutters are a perfect window dressing for this interior look, they go beyond stark minimalism and match the Scandinavian Style seamlessly. Plantation Shutters also are very beneficial for your home by keeping the heat from escaping by providing that extra layer of insulation in helping to keep you and your family warm. Perfect to keep your home cosy. Shutters also help reduce the noise from outside keeping the calm, quiet feeling in your space. A very popular colour for the Scandi Style would be Pure White as it blends into the white walls and completes the look.

Ellen Ripa Interiors

We have put together a small collection of Scandinavian Interior designers and Bloggers that we are inspired by for you to have a look at and introduce a little Scandi Style to your homes.

The first Interior Designer we are inspired by is Ellen Ripa Interiors. Ellen grew up in the South of France but is originally from Sweden. After moving to London years later and being away from home made her Scandinavian roots stronger, and this now is the foundation for Ellen Ripa Interiors. We love the way Ellen styles her clients’ homes and introduces the Scandinavian Style by bringing a contemporary look using both modern and classic pieces. Her style is accentuated with pops of colour and texture to develop a combined style.

SH Nordic
