Upcycling Your Old Plantation Shutters

Upcycling Your Old Plantation Shutters

Is it time for you to update and replace your old shutters? Or are you a ‘DIYer’ and searching for an exciting new project? Well then look no further than our latest update on recycling or as we like to call it – upcycling or re-purposing your shutters. Interior plantation shutters can be a fantastic source of inspiration to create a number of stylish yet practical lifestyle pieces to enhance your home or specific space. Moreover, wooden shutters are a unique way to inject the ‘shabby chic’ design trend into your home.

Try your hand at creating a striking light fixture. This feature continues to incorporate the basic window shutter mechanics, making this design both attractive and useful. You shall still be able to adjust the louvres to adjust the amount of light in a room by closing to dim or opening for a brighter light. As you can see from the picture this construction will work better with narrower shutters. Finally, paint the shutters in your desired colour.

Alternatively, re-purposed shutters could be turned into a base of a lamp by adding a solid panel to the bottom and top of the lamp. A great way to create a more modern look is by simply adding a patterned lamp shade.

Why not attempt a quick and easy recreation of your shutters by transforming them into a magazine rack? Depending on your louvre size and how you wish your magazines to fit, you may need to remove every other louvre to accommodate magazines. Alternatively, see how your old shutters can be repurposed to create shelving or even bookcases (which will require four to six shutters depending on the width you envision). This recreation could be effective in creating a more coastal appearance, for instance, this would look great in a bathroom.

Despite coming out the other side of the Christmas hustle and bustle, festive decorations for any holiday is a great way to create a new look for old shutters. Visit our previous blog posts to see how you can repurpose or even do up your current shutters for holidays such as Halloween and Christmas.

Repurposing your shutters does not have to be merely inside but look to your garden for plenty of inspiration. There are a variety of projects to try, for instance, a garden fence both useful for privacy and adding style to your garden.

Alternatively, take inspiration from European type window flower boxes and turn your salvaged shutters into a garden gallery by creating a box and filling them with a variety of your favourites flowers or succulents for a point of difference.

Add a stunning and unique feature for any bedroom by creating a cost-effective headboard. To construct this you will require approximately four painted shutters, either at differing heights or at the same height for a square look. Subsequently, fix them to the wall behind the bed.

Many of these DIY ideas not only will look great but will be a cost-effective way to do something a little different in your home today.  We would also love to hear any other ideas you have on upcycling your shutters.

I love my new blinds. They are high quality, look beautiful and were at the most competitive price. The fitters were also very polite and efficient.

Plantation shutters visited my flat 20 January 2022 to measure, discuss slat size and material, and give me a free estimate which I was happy with.
