Shutter tension is what holds the louvers (slats) in place when you move them. Proper tension allows the slats to move smoothly without being too stiff or too loose. Over time, with regular use, the tension can shift, causing slats to either flop down or become difficult to move. Fortunately, adjusting the tension is an easy fix with just a few basic tools.

Tight Louvers vs. Loose Louvers

–         Tight Louvers: If your slats are too stiff and difficult to adjust, the tension is likely too high. This can make using your shutters less convenient and, over time, can cause wear on the mechanism.

–         Loose Louvers: If your slats won’t stay in position and tend to flop down, the tension is likely too loose. Loose louvres can make it difficult to control the amount of light and privacy properly.

If you’re dealing with either of these issues, don’t worry—it’s a quick and simple process to adjust the tension.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Adjust Shutter Tension

2. You’ll need: A flathead or Phillips screwdriver, depending on your shutter’s screws.

3. Open the Panels: Open the shutter panels to reveal the inner frame where the tension screw is located. The tension screws are usually on the sides of the panel, near the middle of the section of louvres.

4. Locate the Tension Screw: Look for a small hole along the side of the panel. Inside this hole is the tension screw. There is usually one tension screw for each section of slats.

5. Adjust the Screw:

–         For Tightening Loose Louvers: Use your screwdriver to turn the tension screw clockwise. This will increase the tension and make the louvres hold their position better.

–         For Loosening Tight Louvers: Turn the tension screw counterclockwise. This will loosen the tension and make the slats easier to adjust.

6. Test the Slats: After adjusting the screw, move the louvres up and down to see if they now hold their position comfortably without being too tight or too loose.

7. Repeat If Needed: If there are multiple sections of slats, such as tier on tier shutters, or full height shutters with a divider rail, repeat the process for each set. Small adjustments should give you the perfect balance.
