Louvred shutters have a reputation of being a relatively new window dressing option because their popularity in London has only recently begun extending across the rest of the UK. However, shutters in their original solid panelled form are one of the oldest dressings that have been classically used and can be seen in historic architecture. As the original style of shutter, for day 13 of our shutter advent we look at solid panel shutters and their features.
Shutters with solid panels are always manufactured in an all-wood material so those choosing solid shutters will enjoy the luxury of our Pearlwood or Ultra wood options. Solid shutters come with 23 paint finish options, 27 stains and also the option to custom colour match to any colour of your choice.
There are two styles of solid shutters; Raised Insert and Shaker Style.
Raised Insert
Raised Insert shutters are made from our Pearlwood material and as the name suggests, panels are raised in the centre to give a decorative groove feature. This style of solid shutters are closest in design to the more traditional shutters and are also cheaper in price than the shaker style alternatives.
Shaker Style
Shaker Style shutters are the most popular of the two solid shutters on offer as they excellently combine modern contemporary aesthetics with the classic associations of a solid shutter. The large framing profile of the Ultra wood which they are manufactured from, along with the simplistic protruded centre, makes them a clean, smart addition and particularly popular amongst interior designers.
What are the benefits of solid shutters?
Solid shutters provide the most complete level of light blockage as having a solid panel in front of the window with no tolerance gaps for slats naturally blocks out any light. This solid wooden covering in front of the window is also the most effective way to insulate the window area from heat escaping.
It is still an appealing choice for homeowners to opt for solid shutters because the simplistic design can be a desirable addition in modern aesthetics, mixing this traditional window dressing with contemporary interiors. Having solid shutters on windows can give the appearance of extending the room architecture with the shutters not looking like a temporary part of the room but a more permanent fixture.
We have installed some truly stunning solid shutters in our clients’ homes. You can use these lovely examples to inspire your own shutters and decide whether solid shutters are for you by browsing our Gallery or heading to our Solid Shutters style pages.
