Today we explore another great shutter material choice in our Craftwood MDF.
The robust, low price and wonderful finish provided by this entry level product makes MDF one of our most popular shutter materials for those not looking for full wood options.
What is MDF?
Craftwood MDF is an intelligent combination of MDF (medium density fibre), LDF (low density fibre) and HDF (high density fibre) materials covered in a polypropylene coating. Featuring the famed non-twist core centre which makes our materials so long lasting, MDF is well known for creating robust shutters that are ideal for well trafficked areas where the window dressing is susceptible to being knocked or needs a little extra durability.
What are the main benefits of MDF shutters?
- 9 wonderful paint finishes that pair with modern interiors.
- Polypropylene coating which improves the prevention of moisture absorption (not fully waterproof) and stain removal.
- Ideal for family homes or busy, well trafficked areas.
- Most cost effective material in our range.
Are there any downsides to MDF?
MDF is a brilliant material choice and a popular selection for many clients and their windows, however there are some instances that other materials in our range may be better suited.
The robust nature of MDF means that it is particularly heavy in weight which can make it unsuitable for very large windows and customised shapes. We also usually advise against this option for tier on tier style shutters to prevent top panels dropping over time. Some people favour MDF in bathrooms or kitchens but if the shutters will be exposed to high levels of moisture, either through direct water contact or high levels of steam then our waterproof material will be required to avoid damage over time.
Is there an alternative to MDF?
Those looking to upgrade from MDF may be interested in our Hardwood timber material. Hardwood provides a fantastic middle ground between the entry level MDF and our full wood Pearlwood choice. Panels and slats are manufactured in wood with an MDF fixing frame to reduce the overall cost of the shutter. Hardwood shutters also open up a wider selection of paint finish options with 23 standard selections available or a choice of custom colour for a small surcharge.
We always recommend that the best way to judge the ideal material for your window is to see samples of the different materials, either at a site survey or by visiting our showroom to see full sized examples. Give our team a call on 020 8871 9222 to discuss or submit a contact form to discuss today.
