Shutters in Barking and Dagenham

The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham is one of the smallest Boroughs covering just 36km, situated in East London. It is classed as an outer London Borough north of the Thames Gateway; an area designated as a national priority for urban restoration.

In the 1800s the borough was mainly characterised by farming, woodland and fishing fleet in Barking. By the end of the century, it had ceased to exist with the replacement of train deliveries of fresh fish from the east coast ports. As the district began to build up so did new industries. After WWII further, public housing projects were built to rehouse many people that lost their homes during the London Blitz. As a result, if this the farmlands were slowly being taken over by housing and people from Central London. With this large growth in population for the borough, it has given us at Plantation Shutters plenty of opportunities to work with the residents. With this, there’s a need for help with light and how it’s accessed while adding some beautiful made to measure wooden shutters to get your neighbours a little jealous.

On top of this, it’s an area in constant development, attracting new homeowners all the time. The borough is popular for its access to boundless country air. Something many Londoners forget actually exists. Since the area started to bloom with families, so has the amount going on in the area for families to get involved with. Such as local parks with scenic meadows and walking trails.

Originally being vast farmland there is still plenty of greenery mixed up with the residential homes. You can take a walk through the Eastbrookend Country Park or take a stroll along the Thames barrier, one of the world’s largest movable flood barriers, at the south end of the Borough. One of London’s earliest Abbeys being formed in the year 666 was the Barking Abbey.  There is also the Elizabethan Eastbury Manor House and Valence House Museum.

As stated above this borough has such a rich history with a continually growing population. In 1963 the Municipal Borough of Barking and Municipal Borough of Dagenham were combined to create one borough in Greater London. At the time the unification the combined population was around 180,000 and has since grown to around 210,700 in 2011. Some famous former and present residents that, over time, became a part of this increase including; EastEnders stars Danny-Boy Hatchard and Jamie Borthwick, Actor Nick Frost, many football stars and Captain James Cook was married in Barking in 1762. Just a few names to round up just one of the many great boroughs of London.
