When I purchased Plantation Shutters Ltd in 1995 from the then owners, I enquired as to the origins of the name to really get a grasp on every aspect of this company.
You will likely have seen the name ‘Plantation Shutters’ crop up on multiple sources on the internet, in general enquires and most prominently on other shutter websites because interior shutters are actually called Plantation Shutters. Plantation Shutters Ltd was self-named from the product sold, a ‘does what it says on the tin’ sort of approach.
Whilst the denomination is the same, Plantation Shutters' origins did not come from Plantation Houses which historically contained powerful individuals, many of whom used and obtained their wealth in unorthodox ways.
It is widely agreed that interior shutters gained the name ‘Plantation Shutters’ thanks to tea plantations which originally used slatted shutters to regulate temperature and moisture content when drying tea.
The conation had nothing to do with Plantation Houses who perhaps latterly took on the product, as did many other buildings too in fact, to provide a similar purpose as the shutters did on tea – that is to regulate the temperature and moisture content of a home. This window dressing now naturally provides similar benefits as well as being a stylish alternative to curtains or blinds and are loved by many.
