Accidents happen, and over our many years of working in the shutter industry we have come across a huge range of instances where shutters fall victim to accidental damage.

We pride ourselves in the build quality of our shutters and their strength against damage, so the majority of our customers never experience issues with their shutters. However, wooden shutters are sadly not always equipped to deal with some of the more dramatic accidental damage that we have come across over the years… and trust us, we’ve heard some interesting stories.

From shutters being used as goal posts, to animals trapped in a room using the shutters as scratching posts or chewing through slats to escape, it seems that even robust shutters can’t always come up against the wrath of children and animals. So, occasionally we are contacted by a mix of either disgruntled or amused homeowners whose shutters have been through the wars and are looking for us to arrange repairs or replacements.

In many instances where a slat has broken, the best course of action to get the shutters back to their beautifully finished former state is to arrange a replacement slat to be fitted in place.

If only a minor chip has been caused as a result of the accidental damage, then these can occasionally be touched up but replacements are usually the most recommended course for the smartest finish on the shutters.

To order replacement slats you can simply get in touch with our team who will be able to assist. Once you have identified the slat which needs replacing, our team refer back to your original order to confirm the panel location of the damaged slat and the exact set of shutters to ensure that the custom-made replacement is the perfect size.

Replacement slats need to be linked to a previous order so that batching methods are precisely matched in manufacturing the slat ensuring an exact match to the shutters in place. For this reason, we are only able to offer replacement slats for shutters have been supplied by Plantation Shutters. We are able to offer replacement slats on both a supply only basis and to be fitted by our experts. To get a costing, simply call us on 020 8871 9222 to discuss.

If you are looking to put some preventative measures in place to help avoid slat damage in the future, or any further damage if you have already fallen victim, there are a couple of options.

From the offset, choosing a robust material is one of the best options to avoid accidental damage. The most robust material on offer is our Aluminium Security shutters but as these are more expensive than our other standard materials, you may be looking for a cheaper alternative. In this instance, our Craftwood MDF is a good alternative. If you are conscious about damage occurring to the shutters, another option is to order some extra slats on placement of order if the panels throughout the shutter will be the same size… might also be worth closing the football pitch down!
