Bay Window Shutters

Bay windows are a common style of window found in many London homes and shutters are popularly selected as an ideal window dressing of choice.

Fitting shutters to bay windows can be complex because there are multiple different styles of bay window and the requirement to dress each is different. Every bay window style will have different angles, and different needs and the overall aesthetic will very much depend on a combination of design preferences and the style of bay window that is in place.

Standard Bay windows

Classic bay windows usually have three sections and are the most common style found in London homes. Often the back panel will be flat and sides angled out creating that traditional bay window shape that would come to mind. Full height shutters tend to be the most popular style of shutter to be fitted on bay windows as having this wonderful dressing extending the whole height of the area creates a wonderful level of coverage boosting privacy and light control to the most ideal level. Tier on tier shutters are also a great option for bay windows in living rooms as the possibility of controlling top and panels independently gives an additional versatility to the use of the shutters. Wooden shutter materials tend to be best suited for bay windows as the nature of the materials means they are lighter in weight which allows for larger panels.

Box bay windows

A box bay window is exactly as it sounds. A large single window or multiple panels sit flat at the back of the window and the panels at the side join at a 90-degree angle so the overall window has the shape of a half rectangle or square. Box bay window shutters usually require corner posts at the join so that panels have a seamless transition between from one to the other creating a flush finish for the overall dressing.

Curved/ bow bay windows

Curved bay windows, also known as bow windows have many window sections (usually 4 or 5 different panels) all joined onto each other that create a semi-circular finish. These bay windows give a beautiful effect to rooms but are very hard to dress without loosing their effect because of their more complex shape. Shutters make the ideal solution to this window style because their custom-built nature means that customised posts between each panel can achieve the same curve of the window behind.

Bay window shutters are the most complex to fit due to the angles that are in place. Details such as custom bay posts can ensure that the shutters have a beautiful and flush finish which truly makes the difference between a high quality finish and a less skilled finish. Plantation shutters visited my flat 20 January 2022 to measure, discuss slat size and material, and give me a free estimate which I was happy with.
