We recently made a visit to a beautiful home near Acton, Chiswick, Ealing and so, of course, the iconic Ealing studios that have housed production for some of the best films to ever come out of Great Britain. In this home, we installed some stunning shutters to a proud square bay window in a client’s living room.

After the client had called up our outstanding in house team and gave us a basic understanding of what they were after, we organised for one of our very experienced surveyors to pay them a visit so they could take accurate measurements and talk through the options available to the client.

The client mentioned to our surveyor that, as you can see, the window is large and there’s a wave of natural light that washes through. The client wanted to have options for how the light shines through while at the same time having that aspect of privacy that we all want for our living rooms that look out onto the street meaning that people from the outside can look in.

With that, we suggested Full Height shutters as it completely covers the window space but ensures that desired level of privacy that the client wanted. So that’s what he chose as other options would have left the window with open spaces that the client didn’t want. With the window being so large, however, we suggested a mid-rail addition to adding extra support to the Louvres so they don’t strain to do their job.

Once the style had been chosen, the material of the shutter had to be decided and the client opted for the Hardwood which as a solid wood product is of excellent durability and is resistant to chipping, warping, fading and cracking. It’s also a great compromise between the more premium wood materials we have such as Pearlwood and the more cost-effective but heavier options such as Craftwood MDF.

With the shutter style and material being picked out, next to decide on was the louvre size. This is typically something that is chosen with the desired style in mind and this was no exception. Our client chose the In Vogue (76mm) size slat that has been a very popular option with our customers for quite some time for its minimalist look. As you may be able to see from the picture, the size they have chosen gives the panels a utilitarian appearance that would look too spaced apart with a larger size and too cluttered with a smaller size of the slat. And for ease of use and as a money-saving option, the client chose to have a central tilt rod to operate the slats.

Now that all the decisions that go into the structure of the shutters had been chosen, came the decisions that go into colour. As the room itself is of a very neutral colour, the choices of colour for the shutters to come in is very broad, but with the client’s chosen décor for the house, they wanted a colour to conform with the space around them so they opted for the popular, for obvious reasons, Silk White. But with that chose a Nickel Plated fixture to let the frames not completely sink in with the walls, and resulted in this outstanding final product.

As square bay windows are quite rare we really enjoyed helping our customer with the measuring and fitting of a great window dressing option.
